The silence from the FCO in the UK was true, but that doesn't mean that good work wasn't going on overseas.

I met the British Ambassador to Latvia when we went over for Riga Pride earlier this year. He had spend considerable time reminding the government there of their obligations, and emphasizing that the UK fully support LGBT pride event and looked for the same level of support in other countries. Other ambassdors (most notably in Poland and Bulgaria) were similarly spreading the values of the UK.

It is reassuring to see they are openly supported from the very top of the FCO!

Agree with you Brian but for those of us living in the country we need as much support and help as we came get. At the moment there is little or nothing and we have to fend for ourselves - all character building stuff but difficult at times. Fortunately we have the 'net and the EU with us but there are no support groups and out gays are few and far between. Sadly a large percentage of gays in this country have to go through the rigors of hetero marriages for the sake of society, tradition and the homophobic Roman Catholic Church. So any positive support is welcomed. I try to do my bit(I am openly gay) by encouraging and teaching as many young people as I can about the LGBT. I try to set what I think is a good example of an ordinary gay guy (a little camp and boyfriendless at the moment) but normal in all respects. I don't know if I am succeeding but I keep trying. I am a teacher anyway but I also have to be careful.

Those Far-Right thugs from Poland and Bugaria need to be given a very rough reception if we are given the chance. These Thugs are David Cameron's 'Sleeping Partners' no less!

the silence from the FCO on gay rights overseas was remarkably muted until Bryant moved there.

Interesting coincidence
